How To Write Online

Writing well for the Web is a bit different from writing well in general. Here are my top 10 tips for writing well on the Web.

Tip: To write well on the Web, you first need to know how to write well and how to write clearly in general. If you are serious about knowing how to write well, one of the best ways is to improve your vocabulary — not so you know how to use big words, but so you can choose the right word at the right time to convey your meaning precisely and simply. To improve your vocabulary, we highly recommend you try the popular vocabulary-improvement software called Ultimate Vocabulary. Click Ultimate Vocabulary for details.*

  1. Write for your audience
  2. Be brief: keep sentences, paragraphs, and pages short
  3. Use headings and subheadings
  4. Highlight important words
  5. Use an informal tone — there's nothing wrong with using contractions on the Web
  6. Speak directly to the reader — eg, use "you" and "I"
  7. Use the active voice
  8. Prefer verbs to nouns
  9. Use bulleted or numbered lists
  10. Use numerals for numbers — eg, 1, 2, 3, rather than one, two, three
