As a result of numerous articles on photo reading, and experts swearing by it, photo reading has taken the speed reading world by storm. But the concept of photo reading does seem a little unrealistic. Why?
Could you see yourself reading a book at a rate of 25,000 words every minute? Most people could not, and yet that is the ability photo reading is supposed to provide; does it really work?
Photo reading probably does work, to a certain degree, but for very few people — these people have special qualities that mark them out from the rest of us.
Photo reading is essentially a method of speed reading that requires you to go into a state similar to hypnosis. The method opens your mind and ‘loosens it’ so that your mind can take in copious amounts of information and analyze it in a short period of time. As a result of your higher level of perception at that point, you can pick-up on information from a page that is literally flashed before your eyes. Believe it or not, the rare individuals who can master this technique can fully understand exactly what is written in a book within just a few minutes.
To use photo reading to your advantage, you must have a certain degree of natural ability. If you do not have that, then you will simply never be able to read at the rate of 25,000 words per minute that some rare individuals achieve. This is not to say that practising the techniques taught by photo reading cannot help you to increase your reading speed, because they probably can. You will find that you will begin to read quicker and grasp all the advantages that speed reading in general has to offer. But do not expect reading speeds of 25,000 words per minute!
The techniques associated with photo reading are complex and the odds of obtaining real results are not clear cut. So, consider your other options. There are plenty of speed reading software packages that are specifically designed to offer you methods that will help you to achieve more realistic improvements in reading speed. 7 Speed Reading, for example, offers you 7 methods for improving your reading speed; there is bound to be one to suit you.
