Learn To Read Faster

Did you know that it is possible for anyone to learn to read faster? Some people are understandably skeptical. But anyone can read faster if they put in a little time and effort... providing that they find the right strategy to use to increase their skill and their reading speed.

Note: Denise and I recommend only products that we have tried and tested. These include the popular speed-reading software 7 Speed Reading.* This article was written by a freelance writer commissioned by eReflect software, the maker of 7 Speed Reading.

That there are numerous, multi-faceted strategies that can be used to learn to read faster may go some way to explaining why some people believe they cannot learn how to speed read. It may have been that they are using the wrong strategy and it has not worked for them or that they have tried several strategies and have become confused. But keep trying the several strategies available to boost speed reading skills until you find the right one.

A quick look at the best speed reading software programs that are designed to help you learn to read faster shows there are four main strategies for improving reading speed. Not all software programs use all of these and some incorporate further strategies that are based on extensive research; but the basics are:

  • Eliminating Subvocalization — This is basically ceasing to say words to yourself when you are reading them on a page. It may be that you do so out loud, move your lips, or simply say them in your head, but all three of these things will slow your reading speed right down. Strategies for eliminating subvocalization can really boost your reading speed.
  • Expanding Your Fixation — A fixation is essentially your field of vision. As such, expanding your fixation is all about reading more than one word at a time. The strategies that offer this method to help you learn to read faster teach you how to read whole chunks of text at the same time.
  • Decreasing Fixation Duration — This strategy is related to that above but, instead of teaching you how to read a chunk of text at once, it focuses on helping you to read more smoothly. As such, you decrease the time spent on a chunk of text.
  • Avoid Regressions — Regression, in the field of speed reading at least, is reading text more than once. Re-reading even one word can add time to your reading, so eliminating re-reading can give you the ability to learn to read faster.

As you can see, there are certain technical terms that you may not yet recognize but the basic processes behind each strategy are easy to understand and practise. The software packages that are available will effectively give you the tools you need to learn to read faster in no time. The top-of-the-range packages, such as 7 Speed Reading, do offer other strategies as well, so you may find them more appealing when you are looking for the best possible option for you.
